NORTON WAS ONE of the pioneers of ‘managed’ home security, and today it still offers the most user- and family-friendly suite on the market. It may not have the extensive feature set of Kaspersky or Bitdefender, but as a set-it-and-forget-it solution it still has no rivals.
Where Kaspersky and Bitdefender still do expect you to know a little about security (although they are much better than they were), Symantec asks for pretty much nothing. It just does what it does.
There is a lot that goes on in the background here. With web defences, anti-malware (among the best tested), anti-phishing and email and social media monitoring. There is active identity theft protection, stopping the transmission of personal information, and Identity Safe, a useful password manager with device syncing. It also has a backup tool, and the three- and five-device versions of Norton Security Premium come with 25GB of online storage.
But the suite’s crown jewel is without a doubt its family safety features, and if parental controls are a major factor in your purchasing decision this may be the suite to get. It supports mobile and desktop platforms, with an agent installed that monitor’s and manages your kids’ online activities. Reports, alerts, content snippets and recommendations are all delivered to you through a web portal, sparing the need to actually access the devices. Via the same web portal, you can monitor the security of devices attached to your account and set full access rules for all devices.
Even though Bitdefender and Kaspersky now have similar solutions, the breadth, capability and ease of use of Symantec’s solution still sets it apart. If you’re looking for family protection, there’s no better suite.
