Where’s Google gone?

Q
I am using Windows 8 Pro with

Internet Explorer 10. I also use

Google as my homepage.
Recently when I click the button to open

Internet Explorer I get a blank page

rather than my Google homepage. What

has happened?

Confusingly, Windows 8 includes

two versions of Internet Explorer

(IE): a basic, new-style app

launched by clicking a tile on the Start

screen, and a traditional program that’s

launched from the Windows Desktop.

From your description of the problem, it

sounds like you are using the app (new

style) version of IE,

and that this has had

its default homepage

somehow set to

display a blank page.

Th e problem is

easy to fix but, for

added confusion, the

relevant setting is

available only in the

Desktop version of

IE. Click the Desktop

tile on the Start

screen and click the Internet Explorer

button on the Taskbar to launch the

Desktop version of IE. Now click the cog

icon at the top-right of the IE window

and choose Internet

Options. In the Internet

Options dialogue box, select

the General tab, click in the

Home page box and type

http://www.google.co.uk.

Click OK to close the

dialogue box.
Now return to the Start

screen (just press the

Windows key) and click the

Internet Explorer tile. Close the app by

click and dragging from the top of the

screen and, next time you launch it, the

Google homepage will be displayed.
