Marantz Model 60N Network Integrated Amplifier Review

At Marantz, the “Model 60n” steps in with a new design, following the popular 7000N integrated amplifier with streaming capabilities. 7Review has tested it.

Marantz continues to expand its newly redesigned portfolio. HiFi and A/V seem to alternate as the focus, and now it’s time again for the classic stereo range, which manifests in the form of the Model 60n integrated amplifier. Its name fits with the CD60, and the “N” stands for network.

Marantz Model 60N front view

Model 40n and especially the direct predecessor Marantz 7000N are reminiscent of this. This legacy also defines the power class, which Marantz lists as 60 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 80 watts per channel at 4 ohms, closely reflected in our measurements. For impulses, about 125 watts per channel are available. This is quite solid. In the lineup, the new Model 60n, with its higher two-digit number, sits below the 10, 30, and 40n but above the Stereo 70.

Along with the already mentioned and, in our opinion, successful design with its high-end carbon look, you’ll find well-proven technology. Of course, there’s a high-quality DAC onboard, which digital source devices can access via coaxial and optical interfaces. What makes the 60n a living room king is the newly added HDMI port for the TV, with bidirectional ARC (audio return channel). Bluetooth is also included for connecting mobile devices to the network.

As a modern amplifier, the 60N features an HDMI port for TV connection.

For speaker connections, Marantz uses the same high-quality terminals known from other models. Unlike some British competitors, these terminals accept bare wires, spades, and bananas — no limitations here.

Modern Features

Bluetooth for mobile devices is available in its latest version, along with LAN/Wi-Fi, AirPlay2, and Marantz claims the device is also Roon-ready. Pre-Outs allow the new amp to use active speakers or enable passive speakers to be bi-amped with an external power amplifier. The front headphone jack meets higher expectations, as we confirmed during testing with a Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro — it sounds rich and full.

Following the general phono trend, the 60n also offers a capable MM input for turntables with magnetic cartridges, though no XLR input is included — not surprising. Similar to the headphone output, it’s well-made technically and sounds good.

Phono MM, three line inputs, as well as USB, LAN/Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Pre-Outs, Subwoofer, and HDMI connections, plus terminals for one pair of speakers and headphones. The Marantz offers plenty of connectivity.

While the push-pull power amplifier with current feedback has been improved, the new amp’s preamplifier features an HDAM upgrade. This includes Marantz’s long-standing discrete operational amplifiers/buffers, now in their third generation.

The DAC is no longer a combination of the ES9010 and AKM; in the Model 60n, it’s been replaced with the more powerful and common ES9018. This DAC can now process PCM files up to 24-bit/192kHz and DSD 5.6 MHz. An upcoming update will add support for 32-bit/384kHz and DSD 11.2 MHz.

The volume control is not just a simple attenuator; it works electronically with variable gain for precision. As expected from Marantz, there is still a tone control section, which we consider positive. Sometimes, adjustments need to be made for room acoustics and speaker placement, and it’s good to have the option.

Well-Thought-Out Features

The still-praised subwoofer output has been simplified, now fixed at 150 Hz, rather than offering a choice of 40/60/80/100 Hz as with the 7000N. However, this isn’t a big drawback since active subwoofers allow for finer adjustments.

Future Marantz owners can also appreciate that the integrated, proven HEOS architecture for comprehensive network functionality continues to evolve. Now, in version AIOS6.5, it supports Tidal Connect — finally! Unfortunately, Qobuz fans will need to wait longer, though Marantz has promised support this year.

The new Marantz has improved sonically. Its refined, elegant, harmonious sound remains, with no trace of the occasionally forceful nature found in Denon siblings. We are talking nuances here, not drastic differences. We see progress in the DAC and power amplifier, enhancing transparency. Jack Johnson’s music still flows smoothly, perhaps even more emotionally, with sharper impulses. It’s a delight to rediscover your music collection with this device.

However, the Marantz Model 60n, priced at around $1,500, costs about $500 more than its older sibling, the 7000N, but offers significantly more features, possibilities, and even a slightly better sound, though the 7000N was already excellent. So, there’s no pressing need to upgrade. But if you’re new to this fascinating hobby or need a replacement, we’d recommend the new Marantz generation.

In the price range between $1,000 and $1,500, the Marantz Model 60n is now one of the most attractive options. Anyone looking for a first-class all-round amplifier with a good balance of features and sound should seriously consider this amplifier.
