Eversolo DMP-A10 Review

Eversolo has two highly coveted streamers in its lineup with the DMP-A6 and DMP-A8. Now, they venture into the higher price class with the DMP-A10. Successfully?

by Michael Lang

The latest achievement from the portfolio of Chinese rising stars at Eversolo now stands there—massive and solid, visually impressive on the shelf.

With its 43 centimeters width, it now conforms to common Hi-Fi dimensions, unlike the more compact models of the 6 and 8 series, without losing its pleasantly unique appearance. Particularly with its curved cooling fins, crystalline-shaped volume control, and the enlarged 6.5-inch display, it presents an unmistakable, CNC-milled face without appearing playful.

Due to the widened format, combining it with components from other manufacturers is easily possible—not just externally but also in terms of its connectivity. The A10 has six digital inputs, including two each in coaxial and optical versions. It also offers three digital outputs. For owners of analog devices, there are three high-level inputs to ensure the connection of classic components. Two of these inputs are designed as RCA, and the third is a balanced XLR input. On the output side, the equipment is just as extensive, with the second pair of RCA sockets intended for connecting two subwoofers.

Particularly clever is that the analog signals delivered are also digitized to enable comprehensive room correction via DSP (Digital Signal Processor). Here, too, the ambition of the Asians is evident, as they didn’t just purchase some standard software but have their own development behind optimizing the sound in the room. For purists, analog signals can also be looped through completely without digitization. Let’s first look at what else has changed compared to the test-proven DMP-A8 model.

A Series of Significant Innovations

Viewing it from the outside—with its high-quality housing, unique CNC-milled volume control, deburred and beautifully shaped cooling fins, and high-quality and extensive sockets on the back—it’s clear that cost-cutting wasn’t a priority here. The more refined, higher-quality appearance and a few additional inputs and outputs alone are certainly not worth an extra nearly $2000. But the more sound-critical inner workings promise significant and promising technical improvements.

The names of the component suppliers, even beyond the ESS converter chips, are impressive: whether capacitors from WIMA, audio-optimized op-amps from Texas Instruments, audio capacitors from Nichicon, or SMD components from Murata—they’ve been generous in cost calculation. This includes the D/A converter chip, now an ES9039 PRO, complemented by a particularly high-quality USB interface. Significant effort was made here to prevent noise and ground loops via USB connections to external DACs and devices using the “iCoupler” circuit to avoid grounding problems.

This is a new isolation technology for electrical separation that aims to minimize mutual interference of individual circuits. A tenfold higher bandwidth is specified compared to the classic optocouplers usually used for galvanic isolation, which should also have a positive effect on the sound properties. The high-performance chip that enables this is supplied by Analog Devices. Technically speaking, these are long-term stable micro-transformers. The precise clock signal and timely arrival of data are ensured by transmitting them to the isolated side of the circuit and synchronizing them again there.

Resolutions up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD 512 are thus possible. As a bonus, they also included the ability to process MQA-encoded files, although this topic should have been settled for most demanding listeners since the system couldn’t prevail against purely high-resolution formats. Besides various sound-influencing functions, the DSP processor also includes a loudness function. Additionally, there are two particularly intensive clock oscillators that prevent any timing fluctuations, with an in-house temperature control. They should also have a clearly positive effect on the listening experience.

We haven’t yet been able to test the fiber optic technology of the SFP interface, which should prevent network-induced noise more effectively than the conventional RJ45 Ethernet interface. The DMP-A10 demonstrates its analog competence with its fully symmetrical analog preamp circuitry, including the equally symmetrical volume control. This enables the A10 to take on a secondary role as a preamplifier. A special feature of the volume control is the combination of relays and precision resistors to ensure perfect channel balance, minimal distortion, and noise-free operation. The volume control is only in the signal path when actively used; otherwise, the entire control circuit is bypassed. Another fine feature of the control: When starting up or switching to another source, the volume is set to a reduced value.

The Dilemma of Choice

Eversolo offers two really good streamers in different price classes with the DMP-A8 and the DMP-A10. Here you can see the differences:

The DMP-A8

Offers extremely much for the money, sounds musical, and is easy to use. You have to do without room calibration.

  • + The DMP-A8 is characterized by an extremely good price-performance ratio.
  • + The converter from AKM used is high-quality but not state-of-the-art like in the DMP-A10.
  • + Sonically, the DMP-A8 is so musical that it makes a good impression even with high-quality systems.
  • The workmanship is good but not as high-quality as in the DMP-A10, neither in the housing nor in the components.
  • Fewer features and connectivity options than the DMP-A10, especially lacking room correction.
  • The display is slightly smaller than in the DMP-A10; the remote control is simple and made of plastic.

The DMP-A10

Is the right device for the demanding perfectionist. Top equipment and excellent workmanship. Expensive but good.

  • + The high price is very fair compared to the competition due to sound, features, and workmanship.
  • + A wealth of new technologies has been integrated with high-quality and long-term stable components.
  • + More connectivity options for inputs and outputs and room calibration bring added value.
  • Operation is more complex than with the DMP-A8 due to the extensive possibilities.
  • The minimal enlargement of the display to 6.5 inches is not noticeable in practice.
  • The sonic advantages are not spectacular and only significant in high-quality systems.

Best Components, Clean Design

Two linear power supplies, separate for the digital and analog sections, ensure a clean and constant voltage supply to the respective modules in conjunction with a generously sized smoothing capacity. As in the DMP-A8, the “Eversolo Original Sampling-rate Audio Engine,” or EOS technology, is also found here, which, unlike ordinary sample rate converters, passes on the original audio signal unchanged. Therefore, files like those from Apple Music are played back losslessly in the best possible resolution.

Technically, this is somewhat complex, so here’s enough for better understanding: With Android, but also any other operating system, the multitude of different audio signals from programs and the operating system go through a so-called “mixer” before output. There, these unequal signals are adjusted in sample rate and volume to a uniform output signal. The EOS technology bypasses this mixer and thus retains the original signal of the respective source. Thus, EOS ensures the output of the signal in maximum quality.

Operation on the Device or via App

For pure hardcore sound enthusiasts, the operability of a streamer may be of secondary importance, but for the average user, possibly the decisive argument for or against purchasing a device. After more than a year of almost daily engagement with the DMP-A8, there’s little to criticize about the operation. We have communicated improvement requests to the manufacturer. Shortly thereafter, we received an email that our suggestion of something like a “Home” button in the app was implemented for all models. Now, for example, you can quickly jump from the streaming function to the input selection without having to press the “Back” button multiple times.

We also saw potential for improvement in the input selection. Because under the icon “Source” or “Input,” one unexpectedly also finds the selection of which of the analog outputs should be activated, while other settings for the output signal are under the menu item “Settings.” This not entirely logical arrangement is also to be remedied shortly and will in the future be found under the name “Input/Output Selection” instead of under “Source.”

Two linear power supplies, separate for the digital and analog sections, and a clean design with high-quality components are protected from external influences in the solid housing.

Another promise, which was probably already fulfilled while you are reading these lines, is the “Recently Added” function, where the latest additions to the playlists are immediately visible. Already the 8 has a graphic and a parametric equalizer and switchable filters for the converter characteristics. The DMP-A10 now offers for the first time the possibility to extensively calibrate the sound of the speakers to the room using extended DSP capabilities.

Sound Tuning and Room Calibration

This can even be done in a pinch with the smartphone microphone. Our recommendation is clearly to invest an additional $69 and buy the calibrated Eversolo measurement microphone, which is supplied with a small table stand. The measurement results are more reliable with it.

The housing is precisely crafted and, including the cooling fins, visually unique. All parts are CNC-milled. The cooling fins are not necessarily needed here, unlike in the AMP-F10 power amplifier.

All sound changes, including the possibility of calibrating the subwoofer outputs, can be switched on and off, which avoids forced double conversion from analog to digital and back when using purely analog sources like turntables. It’s clear that these possibilities of sound influence are not necessarily suitable for technology beginners. Because in addition to frequency response, things like dynamic compression and even a time delay between the speakers can be set for asymmetrical setup or listening distance.

Ultimately, all these possibilities can promote the play instinct and the joy of experimentation but carry the risk of overdoing it and worsening the sound. An experienced and committed dealer is our recommendation in this case as well, so that the purchase doesn’t end in a fiasco due to lack of service, but the full potential of the investment can be exploited. Otherwise, we could definitely imagine a video tutorial showing the procedure in detail and discussing possible errors during calibration—perhaps in English with subtitles in the respective sales country?

Useful Features and Extras

If you have young people in your home, you might occasionally wonder whether and how it’s possible to sensitize them to good sound. Perhaps it works if you demonstrate how much more fun music can be when you send it in high quality from the mobile phone via the currently best possible Bluetooth connection through the Eversolo to the home system. The so-called “pairing process” is completed here in a few moments. Music from the computer can be transmitted just as comfortably to the Eversolo via the “Transfer” function. We like that files can be ripped and stored on the SSD chip or simply played back with a CD-ROM drive connected via USB.

Also, music files from local NAS drives or storage devices in the network can be added to the music library along with all available metadata. You can then compile the playlists as you like. New apps like radio stations or podcasts can also be integrated—a big plus compared to most competitors who do not offer this option. More in the direction of “nice to have,” but not really necessary, are the various switchable customization options for the display. This ranges from colors to various clock displays to rhythmically bouncing bars or VU meters.

Many Nuances Bring Sound Improvements

When comparing the sonic qualities with the DMP-A8, you won’t be overwhelmed even with high-quality systems. Nevertheless, differences soon become apparent, which become increasingly clear with longer listening.

When listening to strings like with Max Bruch or Joseph Haydn, they gain in three-dimensionality, appearing fuller without being bloated. The artists now play with more verve and accuracy; the required precision of their performance seems to come more easily to them. Everything appears more elegant and effortless. The double basses of Charlie Haden or Ray Brown have a bit more punch, sounding at the same time more precise. Here, too, a more realistic size representation convinces.

Even with well-produced rock music like Steven Wilson, no curtains disappear, but the presentation seems more real. After many more experiences, the last station was stadium rock. Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” dispelled any doubt about the superiority of the DMP-A10 in fractions of a second; the goosebumps of the listeners were irrefutable proof. Thus, the DMP-A10 justifies its higher price, especially in a high-quality environment, not only through better workmanship and higher-quality inner workings but also through its acoustic quality.
