Liteon eUAU108 Review

A must have for ultrabook users

An External DVD/CD writer is
a good tool for netbook
and ultrabook users.
Logically, any
netbook or
ultrabook
can’t
feature
a DVD
writer
for two reasons
— it increases the thickness
and adds weight to the device.
And this is where an external
DVD/CD writer like the eUAU108
proves to be a big boon. The
device is USB powered, thus
easy to connect. It can also be
connected to any tablet with an
USB port, although the tablet
should be capable of providing
adequate power to the device.
The drive is really sleek and
light. At just 142×13.2x150mm, it
takes very little space and can
be easily carried with your
ultrabook/netbook. Weighing
just 250g, it is super light too.
Encased in a glossy black
plastic with a matte gold finish
on the bezel, the drive looks
elegant but is prone to
scratches. The manufacturer’s
logo is embossed on the top left
of the drive bay. There is a single
switch for eject. Liteon has
cleverly hidden the connected
USB port and wire.

The device supports
plug-n-play, so we didn’t face
any problems while connecting
it to an ultrabook, netbook or
even a hybrid tablet like the
ASUS transformer. It can run
without needing to install any
drivers.
Once connected, the drive
checks for required power and
shows the status through the
single indicator housed on the
drive bay. Glowing blue means it
ready to work, red means the
connected computer is unable to
supply ample power. Nero 8
Essentials for Windows and
Linux comes bundled.
It’s easy to read and write CDs
with a maximum achievable
speed of 24x. The DVD writing
speed in our test was 8x. During
our test, it took around nine
minutes to write an R-DVD. We
also tried using an USB extender
but that didn’t hamper the
drive’s performance.
Sporting an MRP of Rs 2,700,
the device is expected to be
available for a little less in the
market. The LiteOn EUAU108 is
a real utility for netbook and
ultrabook users or for those who
requires a substitute for their
laptop’s defective disc writer.
